Contractors / Builders

From a contractor’s perspective, a structure being designed has to work not only on paper, but also has to able to be built in the field.  Here are a few key points to consider when choosing an engineer:

Constructability

Creating a structure that works on paper is one thing, but generating a set of plans that can actually be constructed in the field is something very different.  Can the engineer provide a set of drawings that will meet all applicable building code requirements and remain within the projects budgetary constraints?

Field Revisions

Once a project goes into construction it takes on a life of its own and no matter how accurate the structural plans are, issues will most likely arise that will need to be addressed. This is when you will want an engineer that will not only answer your questions over the phone, but will be willing to come out to the job site and work with you to come up with a fix to accommodate actual field conditions.

Materials

At the end of the day, the contractor is responsible for taking a set of drawings and creating a structure; a structure created from lifeless materials.  Can the engineer create a structure is that is safe for its occupants while minimizing costs from unnecessary materials?

Reasonable Fees

Bottom line: Can the engineer deliver on all of these key items for a reasonable fee?  In this rough economic climate we are all faced with the question, “What is the lowest price that I can complete this project for, and remain profitable?”  Any fees that are paid to sub-consultants cut into your profit, so it becomes critical to find an engineer that can meet all your expectations at a price that will maximize your profit.
